Coaching Singles:
Lowering the divorce rate starts by reaching people when they are single.
Coaching singles as a specialty was pioneered by RCI founder David Steele, a Marriage and Family Therapist who fell in love with coaching in 1997. Excited about applying what he was learning about Life Coaching to relationships, Steele had the epiphany that “Singles become couples,” and set about formulating a specialized approach to coaching singles that become the basis of his Conscious Dating book and coach training program.
Sometimes referred to as “Dating Coaching,” relationship coaching for singles addresses much more than the dating process, such as life purpose and vision, relationship requirements, needs, and wants, addressing all personal relationships such as friends, family, community, and many other issues that impact the ability of singles to find lasting love.
In many ways, singles are ideal coaching clients:
- Easy to identify and market to
- Clearly identified goal
- Motivated
- Confused about the dating process and often frustrated and discourage
- Usually have discretionary time and income
- Usually seeking creative solutions and ideas
- Enjoy attending group programs such as classes, workshops, seminars, events, which are ideal marketing activities
- Since half of the adult population is single, potential clients usually exist in significant numbers in any group, such as churches, universities, clubs, service organizations, etc, making them prime marketing venues

Coaching Couples:
Many professionals such as counselors, therapists, ministers, educators and social workers have referred to their work with couples as “coaching,” however, the application of the tools, skills and strategies of the emerging field of professional coaching to couple relationships was pioneered by David Steele, founder of Relationship Coaching Institute.
As a Marriage and Family Therapist burning out working with couples in trouble to “save” their marriages, Steele recognized the limitations of therapy to help couples when it was often too late and determined that coaching was the preferred methodology to reach couples earlier when their relationship is more functional.
Steele identified the following stages of couple relationships, which became the couples coaching curriculum of Relationship Coaching Institute:
- Pre-commitment: when two singles become a couple, prior to deciding to become committed.
- Pre-marital: couple decides to become committed
- Coupling: becoming a functional, committed couple; most couples in trouble are stuck at this level
- Bliss: achieving deeper and increasing levels of intimacy, trust, love, spirituality, etc
