-------------------------------------------------------------- 7. A TRIBUTE TO KEN DONALDSON
Ken Donaldson, my friend and business partner returned from
the ICF conference a few weeks ago on fire with a commitment
to pursue his ideal practice that, unfortunately, meant
resigning as Director of Practice Development for RCI and as
President of BYIP.com.
While I'm sad to see him move on, I have tremendous respect
and appreciation that he is walking his talk and moving on
for all the right reasons. I know he loves his work here at
RCI and we have a lot of fun together, so I know this
decision must be very hard for him.
In addition to being a talented therapist and coach, Ken is
an award-winning nature photographer with a vision of
combining his passion for helping people with his art. To
check out his photography work visit
http://www.kenileephotos.com
I have no doubt that Ken's moving on will open new doors for
him, as well as for RCI.
Thank you Ken for lending us your heart, talent, passion,
experience, and knowledge, and helping our programs evolve
to where we are today. We wish you the best and look forward
to your continued participation in our community.

CONGRATS TO Ken Donaldson (Largo, FL) who writes about ICF 2003:
"Now that the dust has settled and I am in somewhat of a normal routine, I wanted to share with each of you my ICF conference experience. Let me start by saying, “Wow!!” I was at the ICF conference a few years ago when it was in Orlando and I have to say that it has not only grown tremendously (I think I heard that there were about 1200 people there this year), but also it has gotten even better…in fact, it has gotten more better!
I was in the RCI/BYIP booth most of the time and
did not attend any of the sessions, but was there
ever some wonderful “buzzing” going on. The level
of positive energy was hard to compare to anywhere
else that I have experienced.
I met so many wonderful new people, but one of the
BEST highlights was actually meeting the people
that I have talked with over the phone and
exchanged e-mails with for so long. We are truly
blessed with an amazing community of wisdom,
experience, fun, and encouragement…..I feel more
blessed that ever! And do you all ever know how to
party!!
The space of being around all these “possibility,
purpose, and passion” people had some additional
side-effects. I believe it invited us all to
really look at who we are, where we are going, and
what we all about. I was personally reminded of my
purpose, my vision, and my path. It was a great
time and space to do some inner inventorying and
reflection…..and so to ICF I say “Thank You” from
the bottom of my Heart and the depths of my Soul.
CONGRATS TO Mari Smith (San Diego, CA) who writes:
"I am SO excited to share that tomorrow morning I will be on local television - KUSI morning news, channel #9 if you're in the San Diego area!
Apparently it is Relationship Week - not sure if that's
local, national or ? KUSI is doing a week-long special on
relationships and I'm covering the segment on "Finding Love
After 30/40+". They are focusing on what busy professionals
are doing to meet like-minded singles. Of course I'll be
talking about the Four Levels of Attraction Venues!
Check your local news to see if Relationship Week applies in
your area - perhaps there are more opportunities for media
exposure.”
---------------------------------------------------------
Our coaches are certainly committed, talented, and making
things happen! It is my honor to be part of this community that is
making such a difference in the lives and relationships of
others.
Have a win you would like to share? Any graduates from your
coaching 'find the love of their life and the life that they
love?' Please pass it on and we'll celebrate it!
Feature Article
How To Be A Great Coach
by David Steele
To be honest, I consider myself a “good” coach, but not a “great” coach. What's the difference? A good coach is
skilled at helping their clients achieve their goals, a
GREAT coach facilitates their client's ability to achieve
their own goals.
Get the difference? Two things interfere with my being a “great” coach:
I'm an inveterate “helper.” I love to help and be the
rescuer and hero. That's why I became a counselor and
therapist 25 years ago.
I intentionally mix teaching and consulting with my
coaching. My coaching niches require specialized information
and I tell myself that I can't be a flat mirror for my
clients if they are to be successful.
Still, I have experienced some truly great coaches and have
tremendous respect and appreciation for their ability to be
invisible and facilitate their client's greatness. They are
able to maintain and sustain a “coaching attitude” with
their clients like a perfectly still pond at sunrise,
totally focus on their client, seemingly always quiet and
centered, almost effortlessly illuminating their client's
brilliance. They empower their clients and live by the
attitude “Give me a fish, I eat for a day; teach me to fish
and I eat for a lifetime,” however, they are masters at
transparently leading their clients through a discovery and
learning process without directly teaching them. While I can
do this part of the time, great coaches maintain this
attitude all of the time with their clients.
To define my terms:
COACHING: Helping your client define what they want and
supporting them to reach their goals. (“I want to learn how
to fish and will take my first fishing trip by the end of
the year”)
CONSULTING: Providing specific, targeted advice and
information your client needs to be successful. (“What
licenses do I need? What lures should I use? Where are the
best places to fish?”)
TEACHING: Providing general information and structuring
skill-building opportunities for your client to learn what
they need to be successful. (“Will you show me how to
fish?”)
THERAPY: Diagnosing and treating your clients' clinical
disorders, and/or helping them heal emotional wounds, and/or
addressing internal obstacles to their successful
functioning. (“I'm angry with my father because he never
took me fishing with him when I was young.”)
My sense is that being a great coach is like any other
skill, such as playing the violin, basketball, ballet
dancing, etc; the great ones are passionate about their
skill, study long and hard, and practice it full time. I
suppose that's why I'll never be great, as my coaching has
to share space with training relationship coaches, teaching
practice development, writing, and my various
entrepreneurial ventures.
Want to be a great coach? Some suggestions:
Join International Coach Federation and/or International
Association of Coaches. Go to their conferences, join your
local chapter, be active in your professional community and
hang out with your fellow coaches. http://www.coachfederation.org http://www.certifiedcoach.org
Get thorough training by the best coach training school
you can find that fits with your values. If your goal is
certification, be sure to choose a school accredited by the
certifying agency (see #3 below). We partner with and
recommend the venerable Coach U: http://www.coachinc.com
Be an enthusiastic client. Work with the best mentor
coach you can find. Ask other coaches for recommendations.
Do your practice development homework and build a
successful practice so you can focus on your coaching
instead of survival. Check out my book and program at
http://www.buildingyouridealpractice.com
Maintain daily focus on your self-awareness and
development to reinforce your ability to effectively
strengthen and sustain your “coaching attitude.” For
example, maintain a “Daily Balance Practice” such as
meditation, journaling, exercise, etc, that allows you to
get and stay centered and grounded, mentally, emotionally,
and spiritually.
I humbly applaud those that are, or aspire to be, a great
coach. I hope this article enhances your appreciation for
them, further clarifies for you what coaching is and is not,
and gives you some ideas for how you can become a “great” coach if that is your desire.
I invite you to share your announcements, wins, coaching or practice tips with the rest of us. Be visible! Let's connect! Send them to me at
