9. NEW PRACTICE BUILDING WEBSITE AND NEWSLETTER LAUNCHED
The practice building information and tips that readers of
“ Relationship Coaching News” are accustomed to getting here
have moved to our NEW monthly newsletter “YOUR PINNACLE
PRACTICE” at www.BuildingYourIdealPractice.com
This month’s feature article is “Basics of Trademarks and
Copyrights.”
Paula Iland, an RCI Coach from Sydney, Australia, passed
away June 14th.
Paula was very special and will be dearly missed in our
community. Below is from RCI Coach Julie Towers who gave us
permission to share this in honor of Paula:
”Paula was such an inspiration to me....and to all of us in
the coaching community. She and I took many coaching
classes together. She would take those classes in the
middle of the night sometimes to be on teleclasses with her
coaching teams. It was incredible dedication.
Her passion for single women and guiding them to fulfilling
lives will forever give me courage... and the hope that my
life partner may just be out there somewhere.
On the morning of September 11 one of the first emails I
received was from Paula. Her words to me were so calming
and understanding. Even though she was in Australia and I
was in Colorado USA she helped me to see the world as one
big family. Words will never express the comfort I shared
with my friends and family from her email. It helped those
of us in the United States to know that other countries
really did care about us and our losses. She was always so
thoughtful.
Paula and I shared our marketing thoughts and encouraged
each other back and forth through the years... and I came to
love her as a friend and a soul sister. I will miss her
dearly.
I will strive to carry on Paula's love for others and her
passion for women over 50 to find the love of their life…
always.
She left an imprint on all of our lives and hearts that will
never be forgotten.”
Julie Towers

DISCOVER YOUR RELATIONSHIP STYLE
by Vicki Simmons, LMSW/ACP, Life Coach
I use the new DISC “In-Depth Relationship Assessment”
(INDRA) with Singles and Couples. The DISC approach offers
that there are no bad relationships only relationships that
require more or less energy. DISC emphasizes that it is not
about changing “who you are”, but adding/modifying behaviors
that increase effectiveness and comfort in relationships.
It is your choice.
DISC is another wonderful tool which lends itself to
nonjudgmental ways of talking about similarities and
differences. The assessments assume that we all have a
psychological space in which we live. Even though we do not
live in another’s space we may visit other spaces. When I
visit other spaces I will take with me behaviors I have been
taught to do and this requires energy. It is our quest as
coaches to find ways to help our clients discover the tools
that will enable them to show up with more energy and
confidence.
CASE EXAMPLE #1:
She is a 37 year old woman, divorced after 17 years of
marriage. She had slipped into the internet dating game and
was discovering that she was so desperate to have a man in
her life that she was setting herself up to get hurt
repeatedly. She wanted the pattern to stop.
She decided to begin the RCI “Relationship Success Training
for Singles” (RESTS) program. This was really painful for
her because she had never considered herself worthy and
having needs and wants and the thought of requirements was
beyond her, at the time.
While working this program she also received intensive
therapy for reclaiming herself and healing the wounds of the
past. She took a break from the coaching during a portion
of that time period and when she returned she was open and
willing to identify requirements and develop an action plan
for supporting her boundaries.
I had her take the regular DiSC and the INDRA. She was
ready to really know herself and to learn how to better read
people. We had gone through the Social Effectiveness Skills
and the Dating Skills and had recently been working on
Intimacy Skills when she decided to revisit Requirements,
Wants and Needs.
This time she applied her interpersonal relationship style
knowledge from INDRA to take her requirements a step further
than she had previously. This also freed energy for her to
be authentic in relationships and assertive. She used the
people reading maps from the INDRA to help her with the
scouting, sorting, screening and testing. She has gained
confidence in her self and is recognizing the red flags and
moving on without shame.
CASE EXAMPLE #2:
He has a 6 year old son from his first marriage and has been
in his current marriage for 3 years. His complaint was
around having to communicate with the ex-wife. He wants to
be able to do things with his son and wants his son to not
get caught in the middle of issues between him and his
ex-wife. I had him take the INDRA.
Since we did not have the ex-wife take the assessment, we
decided to use the people reading maps in the INDRA to
determine where she would be likely to live on the map. We
then were able to engage in discussion and dialogue around
how their interpersonal styles could be effective together.
He was able to develop an action plan that helped him create
a win-win for him and his son, his wife, and his ex-wife.
He has since gone on to have his current wife take the INDRA
and they are using the strategies from their Dyad Report to
help them enrich their relationship and minimize the energy
drain that comes up for them when their styles are in
competition with one another.
CASE EXAMPLE #3:
She is 36 year old divorced mother of two children. After
grieving her divorce she decided she was ready to date.
She had gone through the RETS program and defined herself as
recreationally dating. She practiced being authentic,
telling people up front about her intent.
I had her take the INDRA and we used it to help her support
the boundaries she had defined for herself. She had a
tendency toward thinking something was wrong with her if
someone did not call her or follow through with plans in the
way that she expected.
She did not want that to get in the way of her newfound
lifestyle and choices so we began using the INDRA “people
map” to discuss different DiSC styles and how they may be in
relationships.
She was beaming at our last appointment together because she
had two victories. She had told a person after one date
that she did not want to see him again and reminded him that
she was recreationally dating not looking for a
relationship. He thought she was just saying that and would
change her mind after a date, she assured him that she was
clear about her boundaries and wished him luck in finding
the love of his life. She also had been successful in
recognizing a person’s interpersonal style and not taking
some things personally that in the past she would have
"soaked up like a sponge”.
She was feeling so confident about her people reading skills
that she decided to sign up for a local speed dating group.
She and I are still contracted for additional work however
at this time she is basking in her gains.
CONCLUSION
These are just a few examples of how I am integrating DISC
into the work with my clients. What I particularly like is
that it prompts discussion and dialogue around most of the
RCI materials.
Whether I am working with singles, couples committed or
pre-committed I find that it serves as a way to weave it all
together. My husband tells me that he likes the kind of
comedy where the comedian will weave a theme throughout
their performance, so even when you think he has traveled
away from it he finds a way to bring it back to the theme.
This is how I use DISC. I use it as the theme or leverage
to keep coming back to the importance of the person knowing
themselves in order to live the life that they love and for
those who choose, to find the love of their life.
