3. HAPPY BIRTHDAY RCI!

In October we celebrated the 5th birthday of RelationshipCoachingInstitute. Time sure flies!

RCI started as a pilot project for singles in my office September 1997, and made its public debut the following month.

Relationship Coaching Institute was established a few years after we began providing relationship coaching training to helping professionals, based upon the work we were doing in RelationshipCoachingInstitute to help singles and couples have successful relationships from a coaching perspective.

RelationshipCoachingInstitute today is the first and largest worldwide relationship coaching program for singles and couples, and Relationship Coaching Institute is the first and largest worldwide relationship coaching training organization.

Happy Birthday to us!

5. RESULTS OF “NAME THAT PERSON!”

Last month we asked the question “What do you call a man or woman you are in a pre-committed relationship with?”, and we have had a good time trying to answer it.

What are the alternatives to “boyfriend” and “girlfriend” when you are mature adults who are a couple, but not (yet) committed? This is a very real lapse in our language! Since we coined the term “Pre-Committed Relationship,” we consider it our responsibility to weigh in with an appropriate label as well.

We have been playing with Beau, Significant Other, Very Special Person, Main Squeeze, Gentleman Friend or Lady Friend, Attache’, Special Relationship, Sweetheart, Friend, Special Friend, Love Interest, Beloved, etc.

"SPECIAL FRIEND" was the top choice of our coaches, and in my opinion makes a very good statement for a pre-committed relationship ("we are a couple, more than friends, exclusive but not yet committed").

You could dress up "Special Friend" to be "VERY Special Friend" as well.

We can now help confused adult singles that feel awkward using "boyfriend/girlfriend" by letting them know that Relationship Coaching Institute officially endorses the title SPECIAL FRIEND or VERY SPECIAL FRIEND for a pre-committed relationship!

Of course, everyone is free to use their preferred language, and this could be revisited in the future if we come up with a compelling alternative.

Welcome New RCI Coaches!

The following coaches joined our ranks this past month:

Monique Belton, Ph.D., Huntington, NY
Mary Friedlein, R.N., Madill, OK
Hazel Palache, Sherman Oaks, CA
Brad Thomas, South Brisbane, Australia
Laura Whittemore, Carbondale, CO

THANK YOU for telling your colleagues about RCI!

Congrats!

CONGRATS to Yvonne Chase (Brooklyn, NY) for earning RCI certification as “Certified Relationship Coach for Singles”

CONGRATS to Colleen DeCew (CO) for doing a great job representing RCI at this year’s ICF conference in Atlanta. Thanks for being our ambassador, Colleen!

CONGRATS TO Lynn Minuk (Alberta, Canada) who writes:

“We have successfully completed our first “Buddies In Team Support” (B.I.T.S.) group "meeting" on October 22nd. The group developed out of our buddy team group meetings during our RESTS program. Our enthusiastic members decided that there was so much to gain from these meetings we have set up our own group to continue the peer support process. Many thanks to our members for "showing up" and sharing their skills and insight. This kind of support is invaluable! Thanks to all our participants! Bravo!!!!”

CONGRATS TO Linda Marshall (OH) who writes:

“I was asked to be the Relationship Coach contributor to Single Source News, a fairly new magazine in town for singles. I am being billed as Dayton's Relationship Coach and write a monthly column for them.

Also, I was invited to present a program to a local singles group called “Interaction.” I've presented to them before. This time I presented the “Dating Traps Game.” Here are some of the comments made by the participants: "I learned a lot...I would like to see more programs like it,” "I loved it. I had a good time,” "I thought it was very good. It was a lot of common sense, but well-organized common sense." I did have some people ask to be notified when I offer the next RESTS program, so I'm generating interest among singles here in Dayton... broadening my focus beyond couples.”

---------------------------------------------------------

Our coaches are certainly committed, talented, and making things happen! It is my honor to be part of this community that is making such a difference in the lives and relationships of others.

Have a win you would like to share? Any graduates from your RCI coaching 'find the love of their life and the life that they love?' Please pass it on and we'll celebrate it!

Relationship Coaching Technology:

Top 10 Guidelines Of Relationship Coaching

By David Steele (with much input from RCI coaches)

  1. Relationship Coaching is not a consulting or therapy.
Coaching empowers by assuming our clients are the expert, fully capable of achieving their goals, and focuses on supporting them into action. Consulting typically provides advice and solutions, while therapy typically focuses on insight and emotional issues. Because these approaches are so different, the coach should be clear about these distinctions, educate clients about them, and make conscious choices about the nature of the coaching relationship that are in the best interests of our clients.
  1. A Relationship Coach helps the client focus on the bigger picture.
Relationship coaching is not effective when isolating our clients’ relationship goals from the rest of their life, such as work, family, friends, wellness, spirituality, etc.
  1. A Relationship Coach shares relationship knowledge, experience, and information without attachment.
Sharing expertise with our clients as a coach is very different from any other helping relationship. It is necessary to address our clients’ relationship skills and knowledge deficits, however we do so in a way that supports them to discover and own their truth.
  1. A Relationship Coach assumes a relationship is part of the journey, not the destination.
We support our clients to focus on meaning, connection, and long-term goals, in addition to helping them find a partner or improve their existing relationships.
  1. A Relationship Coach assumes that the most important relationship is the one you have with yourself.
Our relationships are our mirrors. The Law Of Attraction dictates that what is inside shows up on the outside. We help our clients take responsibility for their relationship outcomes and be the partner they want to have.
  1. A Relationship Coach does not judge a relationship as right or wrong, good or bad.
As stated above, we assume our clients are the expert and honor their truth and agenda. While we have judgments, we do not impose them on our clients. We lead our clients through a process of discovery in which they are empowered to make the relationship choices that are right for them.
  1. A Relationship Coach does not seek to get personal needs met with clients or prospective clients.
An ethical coach values being of service above all else, holds the coaching relationship sacred, and does not allow a personal agenda to interfere with doing so.
  1. A Relationship Coach addresses their clients’ sabotaging attitudes and choices without making them wrong.
We skillfully help our clients become aware of the connection between their attitudes (beliefs, interpretations, etc), choices and consequences, and support them to make their own judgments and decisions about them in light of their Vision, Purpose, Requirements, Needs, and Goals.
  1. A Relationship Coach is neutral about the outcome for pre-committed relationships, and an advocate for committed relationships.
We value using the opportunity while single to make conscious long-term relationship choices, and believe in the power and necessity of commitment to make those choices work and be fulfilling.
  1. A Relationship Coach “walks the talk” by continually addressing his or her own personal and relationship development, challenges, and goals.
We know that we can only help our clients along paths that we have traveled ourselves, and no further, so we must continually strive to be conscious and intentional in our lives and relationships. This includes furthering our own learning and development by working with a coach or mentor, on-going training, and other means.

Practice Tips:

How To Get Published -Now-
by David Steele

The fastest way to the top of your profession is to write a book.

The fastest way to publish a book is electronically as an e-book, however most authors and readers prefer the “old fashioned” hard or soft cover version.

The fastest and most affordable way to get published the old fashioned way (non-electronic) is by using a "Print-On-Demand" company.

This article includes:
1. WHAT IS "PRINT ON DEMAND?"
2. FIVE STEPS TO PUBLISHING A P.O.D. BOOK
3. PRINT ON DEMAND PUBLISHERS
4. SELLING YOUR BOOK
5. KEEPING PERSPECTIVE
========================================

1. WHAT IS "PRINT ON DEMAND?"

"Print-On-Demand" (P.O.D.) means that the company will prepare your book for publication, print and send hard or soft cover copies to order. The author typically retains full rights to the book and there is usually no minimum or cost after the initial set-up.

Typical included services are:
-Formatting
-Cover design
-Register copyright and ISBN
-Order handling

Most offer additional services for an added fee:
-Editing
-Marketing
-Convert to e-book
---------------------------------------------------

2. FIVE STEPS TO PUBLISHING A P.O.D. BOOK

STEP ONE: WRITE BOOK (easier than you might think)
STEP TWO: GO ONLINE, CHOOSE POD COMPANY (see below)
STEP THREE: CHOOSE SERVICES
STEP FOUR: PAY FEE ($99.00 and up)
STEP FIVE: SUBMIT MANUSCRIPT (on-line, e-mail, or snail mail)
--------------------------------------------

3. PRINT ON DEMAND PUBLISHERS

http://www.xlibris.com
(affiliated with Random House)
Cost to set up: $500-$1600.00
Royalty to author: 10-25%

http://www.iuniverse.com
(affiliated with Barnes and Noble)
Cost to set up: $159-$949.00
Royalty to author: 20%

http://www.writerscollective.org
Cost: $240.00 to set up, $100.00 per year after the first year
Royalty to author: 100%

http://www.greatunpublished.com
Cost to set up: $99-$299.00
Royalty to author: 25%
-------------------------------------------

4. SELLING YOUR BOOK

P.O.D. can make it fast, easy, and affordable to publish your book, but you will most likely sell most of your books through your own efforts, even if you pay for their marketing assistance.

All of the marketing methods mentioned in "How To Build Your Ideal Practice In 90 Days" are effective in promoting your book, such as:
-web site
-newsletter
-e-mail announcements
-press releases
-affiliate partnerships
-giving presentations
-word of mouth through your network of clients, colleagues, etc.
-free e-program of excerpts

5. KEEPING PERSPECTIVE

Few authors generate significant income from a book. While the passive income will be welcome, the best value of publishing your book is to give you instant credibility with the public, even better than having "Ph.D." after your name!

Even if your book sales are not very high, your book will open doors and attract opportunities and clients in ways you can't possibly predict. Getting reporters to quote you, TV and radio shows to invite you as a guest, complementary businesses to partner with you, and much more, will be tremendously easier when you have the cachet of a published author.

If you can write an article, you can write a book, so go for it!
